Actual rating: 4.5★

Just as I struggled with getting through the first 100 pages of this, I’m struggling with deciding on a rating. So, I might come back and change it in the future.

(Edit: Just finished The Obelisk Gate, and came back to raise the rating of this to make it clear which I preferred)

The Fifth Season is like a jigsaw puzzle; first you only have separate, ill-fitting pieces, but gradually – after testing your patience - a complete image emerges. It’s both a deeply frustrating and satisfying process. Luckily, in the case of The Fifth Season, the complete image is worth the effort.

However, since the journey at times almost felt gruelling – so much exposition to take in, constantly checking the appendix for definitions not given in the text, getting used to one POV being in second person – it feels wrong giving it 5★.

Even though the destination was spectacular...

Representation of minorities (eg black, LGBTQ) and themes of oppression was woven into the novel so seamlessly and into the plot lines. I also always love a good book that incorporates Avatar-like elemental manipulation powers.

A fine construction of a world where I can see myself without having to enduring the typical realities associated with "seeing myself" in literature with the direct correlation to culture cruelties that are present in the not so distant past and modern day.

I will have to do myself the service of re-listening now that I understand the story telling structure of the book and have a better grasp of the world, its politics, its citizens, cultural dynamics and also how the narrative plays a role in unraveling the circumstances of the world to the reader.

The Fifth Season was a joy to read, with genre-bending appeals to science fiction and fantasy. Jemisin’s powerful command of language and narrative gave me tremendous confidence as she led me through her strangely doomed world.
