The product of someone who doesn’t emulate for popularity or money. It’s so refreshing oh my God. A masterclass. A masterCLASS. To pump so much world building into something that still beats like a heart is *chefs kiss*! She is brilliant! This book is a full meal! An entire feast! it took me lots of time to digest it. But I would say it’s so so worth the journey.

It’s confusing at first. But then I made the game-changing decision to read the glossary/appendix terms before really starting, and it helped me visualize the world, the caste system, and orogeny way better. From there, the book started clicking into place like a seismic puzzle.
What really blew me away is how complex and purposeful the structure is. Jemisin doesn’t just tell a story, she builds an experience, and every detail matters. The emotional weight, the world-building, the social commentary…it’s all intense, and it doesn’t let up.
