A worthy follow-up to the first book in the series [b:The Dawn Patrol|2868920|The Dawn Patrol (Boone Daniels #1)|Don Winslow|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1440040125s/2868920.jpg|2895075]. Boone Daniels is a great character and though the plot was a bit creaky I found it quite entertaining. Listened to the audio version which was read by Holter Graham.

I do have to steel myself up a little for the surfing stuff to be obnoxious, but man knows how to write something that culminates and keeps going fast enough you don't pick at the loose threads on the way.

I may have started this one too soon after reading his previous book because the first third of The Gentleman's Hour seemed to me to be nothing more than a character development rehash of Dawn Patrol.

Things picked up once that was out of the way, and by the time I was halfway through I was interested again.

This is was a very good mystery with alot of twists and turns. The characters are well developed and you find yourself rooting for the protagonist to get everything solved.

Need a quick read - pick up a Winslow!

The problem with reading more and more Winslow is you become a little desensitised to just how good his work is. I think if I’d read this type and style of story by any other author, I’d be blown away, but because it’s a Winslow, it feels a little bit average (but good average!)

The narrative of this is good, punchy, fast paced, short chapters (Classic Winslow tropes), but I feel that the twist in this one didn’t hit the mark or feel as clean as some other books he’s written.

What he did well was make the characters believable, and my heart broke for the crew as the strain was put on their relationship.

Simply put, when your average novel is a 4 star, it’s a high bar to meet each time. Unfortunately, this was possibly my least favourite Winslow book, but ultimately still a great read. That speaks volumes of the author I’ve come to love this year as I continually invest in his work!

Pretty fun. Reminiscent of Robert Crais's early Elvis Cole novels.
