Wow! Can I say I understood what was happening? No. But it was so engaging, it didn’t matter that the science and cerebral nature of the book was way over my head. 

If you told me this story was written by Ray Bradbury, I would believe it! Even the way the narrator read it, was like Martian Chronicles or Fahrenheit 451.  Cixin Liu’s dry and existential humor was so relatable and a pleasure to read. Da Shu (the Police officer-sorry for spelling, i had the audiobook) was hilarious and the voice given him by the Narrator was absolutely perfect lol.

So slow and technical. Absolutely not my cup of tea. More power to you if it is. I would’ve DNF’d so many times, except my husband asked me to read it. There’s a reason it took me a year to finish.

In the first chapter a main character’s father is beaten to death, described in a fair amount of detail. Later in the book, people are cut into pieces by a wire at high speed, but this is not described in detail. Suicide is mentioned but not described.

A main character murders her partner and another person by cutting a rope and letting them fall from a cliff.

Very interesting book. A piece of sci-fi that opens windows on the chinese cultural revolution and the history of science in an engaging and imaginative way, provoking thoughts about our place in the universe and our relationship with the signals we send out.
