A very unique story (do NOT read if you’re squeamish about blood and medical stuff). I thought the romance was beautifully written, I just wasn’t fully immersed, because I felt like it all happened so fast and we skipped multiple steps of relationship building. The ending is definitely unexpected,
I’m not completely convinced the author needed to bring magic into it all
I loved the main character, I thought she was fierce and intelligent!

I  usually don't read historical fiction or YA books but I really liked this one. The story kept me entertained and trying to figure out what Hazel was going to do. I loved the chemistry between her and Jack, as well as the mystery. I would've loved if it was longer because I felt the final chapters a bit rushed, and I would've loved to know more about Bernard, Hazel's actions, etc.
Also, I found some things hard to believe, like the fact that she was a woman and was difficult for her to walk somewhere without a chaperone, but she could run a hospital in her castle? How is it that the mother never found out?
I think the book's finale is one of those where you have to tie the loose ends on your own, based on the information you have. But I do wish it was larger. Overall I liked it and it entertained me a lot

this was a good book! i enjoyed it, particularly for the main character hazel who is a girlboss and for the historical elements woven throughout the book. however i thought that the romance was mediocre, and that the side characters (jack especially) were not fleshed out properly

Nice book but I feel there could have been more to the mystery.

Loved this book! It’s a cool mix of historical fiction and magical realism. I enjoyed seeing Hazel’s medical skills and understanding grow. Though 17 years old, she’s a headstrong and brave young woman tired of the 19th century restrictions against women. She learns ro stand up for herself and to be more skeptical. Eventually she learns how to carve her own path.
The love story element is adorable, deep, romantic, and tender. No smut, which I prefer. I hope in book 2, we learn more about the suspicious behavior of Hazel’s fiancée. Though he is egotistical and condescending, i think he has more depth (albeit cruel and selfish) to offer to the story.
I actually appreciated Dr. Beecham’s logic, though sociopathic and detached.
The characters are socio-economically diverse; we’re introduced to the daily struggle of the poor, the injustices they face, the lack of social safety nets, and how “invisible” they are to the wealthy elite. In contrast, the elite live in large homes. Hazel herslef lives in a castle with servants, horses, a guest house, a carriage, etc.
I’m looking forward to reading book 2 Immortality from my library (currently on hold 😭).
