This book is not as beautiful as its cover. It is gritty and grotesque in the best possible ways. It is so atmospheric that I felt like I was walking the dark streets of Edinburgh with Hazel. I could almost feel the grime. The story is slow to start, but the descriptions of the setting really steal the show in the first half. The second half of the book definitely pick up. I couldn't put the book down at that point. The story becomes twisted and surprising. It does take a little bit of suspended disbelief, but the plot is satisfying. The ending is another thing, but there is a second book. I had to pick up the sequel immediately.

I enjoyed the story so much that I wish the book was longer and not as fast paced as it is. While I think the ending might be controversial, I'm happy to say I liked it a lot.

I don't know what to think.
I love the premise. Hazel is delightfully original. She has good moral codes and fired determination and a heart for the dying. I admire her highly. And I do have a hard time resisting the dress-as-a-boy-to-get-away-with-it plot point.
The prose isn't anything to exclaim over—it could even use some help in places. The ending is... not what I expected. I only actually liked a couple characters in the entire book—most of them are entitled and rude and ignorant and I only barely feel bad saying it.
But man alive is the story spectacular.
