E.M. Forster wrote in the terminal note to ‘Maurice’ that the book might have been easier to publish if it had ended unhappily, ‘with a lad dangling from a noose’. One might criticise Philippe Besson for satisfying this trope. So many queer stories end the same way - but only because so many queer lives have ended the same way.
