A lighthearted slice-of-life story about buddies Buddha and Jesus taking a year off after seeing the world safely into the new millennium, spending it as roommates in Japan, trying to pass as regular guys. They run into many everyday adventures - attending a festival, the constant struggle with their budget, going to a bathhouse, etc - while trying to avoid notice.
Each chapter has a few notes clarifying details on Japanese culture, Buddhism, and/or Christianity mentioned in the preceding chapter, for readers who are not familiar with any of these.
Though these religious figures are shown doing silly things, they are not treated disrespectfully, at least not in this first volume (I haven't read any further yet)--the worst you get is some mild jokes about Buddha's long earlobes, though their symbolism is explained in one of the detail-notes.
My favourite parts: when a series of misunderstandings made a yakuza gangster think Jesus was a kingpin's son...and the haircut ^_^
Recommended for readers who enjoy low-key humor and everyday adventures, and/or don't feel like following a long, complicated, or high-stakes plot

My seventh grade cousin dragged me into the manga section to buy him books that unbeknownst to me his mom had already put the kibosh on. (Oops. He owns them now.)
.
Meanwhile I found this hilarity: Jesus and Buddha decide to take a year off together and explore Tokyo. It was funny and makes lots of allusions to ALL SORTS of the lore about both. But I did not quite fall for it as much as the introduction (by the Japanese arts curator of the British Museum!!!) made me think I would. I’d say it was fun and entertaining, often charming and did a great job of referencing…but I’m not dying to read more of it.
.
It is doing something *slightly* similar to The Wicked & The Divine, but with different characters, and a sweeter sillier plot (that for me was not as interesting).

I love slice-of-life manga with no real stakes. The dialogue, the humor, all of the references to the two religious figures were thoroughly enjoyable.

So sweet, less biting satire like religious comedy can be and more soft jokes about two good boys.

I've been looking forward to reading this manga for ages ever since seeing that clip from the anime of Jesus in the sauna with the yakuza member (which is also wonderfully depicted in this volume.) The religious references and in jokes have real deep cuts, both Christianity and Buddhism, so I was glad for the explanations that followed each chapter so I could get the context.
I love the domestic humor and the buddy relationship between Jesus and Buddha. Always a fan of down to earth stories about otherworldly/monumental figures. It gives them an aspect of levity and it shows a true comfort when we can laugh about what is usually taken so seriously.

Oh my gosh. I knew I'd like this manga... but I didn't realize how much I would like it! This was so funny and cute, it was hard to put down at times.
