Oof a very realistic dystopian book that will be making me overthink everything for a good while

It’s scary to read a dystopian novel set in 2025. Especially when California did burn this year. However, it’s refreshing to see a strong, black female protagonist leading the charge. I loved the dual symbolism around fire with both destruction and rebirth. Also wanna try acorn bread, it sounds kinda amazing

Thoroughly enjoyed thinking about the piece and reading every decision that Olamina decided to take. I physically & mentally uncapped my highlighter for so many lines. Fascinating. Published in 1993. Not prophetic but only the direction made by wealthy inaction & mass inequality. Imagining "the United States as a third world country." Writers let every little bit seep into their writing.
