This was Nora Roberts with some of the plot twisting I expect from her alter ego, JD Robb.

Thoroughly engaging, and I could not guess the ending very much before the main character figured it out.

A woman on the run from herself winds up in a small town in Wyoming. While slowly and very shakily getting her life back together, she takes a hike in the mountains are her day off from her new job as a fry cook. She sees a woman brutally murdered on the other side of a gorge.

When the police investigate, not only is there no body, there's no sign a crime of any sort took place. Is Reece slipping back into the mental instability that led her to commit herself to an institution after she was the victim herself of a terribly violent crime? Or is someone aware that she saw the murder and trying to drive her away--or drive her insane?

A lot of nice, small touches in the writing. Yes, I still think people fall in love too fast in most romance novels, but this one hangs together because of the mystery.

This is my first Nora Roberts book and I enjoyed it. We have Reece who is running from a tragic past while trying to find her place in life. Brody is a writer who lives in Angel’s Fist where Reece seems to land. As Reece is trying to fine her place she gets a job with Joanie working as a cook and loving it because she feels like things are starting to go good for her. One day on a hike she runs into Brody on the trail but after a quick meeting she keeps going. While resting to eat she uses her binoculars to watch across the mountains and in doing so witnesses a murder. Brody is one of the only ones who believes her and is doing all that he can to help her. I did not know who the killer was until the end and I love that I was kept on my toes.

This books was really good. I loved the quippy returns between the leads and I’m honestly really surprised I liked this book as much as I did. Slow to start, the real madness doesn’t happen until the last 100 pages.

The romance is slow burn, but the friendship between them and the trust is so solid that I really didn’t mind the slow build to the actual relationship. The mystery behind it all really fills in the blanks where the relationship slows down.

The book creeps up on you. Slow with the mystery and the emotion and the possible craziness of the female lead to this fiery ending that I sort of predicted as an avid mystery reader. I could see the intent closer to the end, but the vast majority of the book I was completely in the dark. I really love this book, it’s not my favorite romance, but it’s a good light psychological thriller.
