Told in a constellation of poems (some of which mirror each other in structure and share several phrases), short expository chapters, and excerpts from Butler's own writings or interviews, Star Child explores the underpinnings of Butler's inspirations for her writing and her artistic journey from the novel/soap opera about a magical horse named Silver Star in a pink notebook to the Nebula Award and MacArthur Genius Grant.

I think this would appeal to creative writers who love Butler and/or Zoboi, and it would be a cool book to use in ELA classes to explore poetry and the process of writing. There are a lot of places where information is repeated in the different formats or even from chapter to chapter, such as how Butler was shy and quiet as a student. There are many different kinds of poems as well.

I enjoyed this book but had a hard time with the flow. Bouncing back and forth between the informative sections and poetry sections never really got easier. I didn't really dislike either part, I just didn't feel that they paired very well together.

Octavia fans will love this because it feels like a little piece of her somehow lives in these pages.

She’s there…

Very brief biographical note about Butler's life and times that emphasizes the space race and civil rights movement.

This was a beautiful, poetic bio of Octavia Butler by someone who had to pleasure of knowing her. One it's own, the poetry Zoboi crafted is already profound, but the was she was able to tie-in and expound on the stories of Butler's life really enhanced the experience. One detail that stood out to me was the inclusion of some of Butler's childhood writings. Her raw talent shone even in her short stories, and her determination to not just be someone but famous author Octavia Butler was nothing short inspiring. At this point in time, I had not had the pleasure of reading Butler, but reading this bio has given me a sense of urgency to consume her work.
