(haven't watched the show)The writing is very nicely done, I got the twist pretty early on but i think that we're meant to, we just have to sit with Cady as she figures it out, just like the rest of the Sinclairs do. I think the whole story is a good depiction of generational trauma and the longtime effects of it. The way Cady grieves because she's so full of love for her cousins and her first love, the way she can't stand that they all died from something completely preventable, the way she says goodbye to them at the end are absolutely heartbreaking

I was hesitant going in to this book due to the massively mixed reception that it has, people either adore it or hate it and I was worried I would be part of the crowd that wanted it burnt! So for the longest time, I avoided buying it but then my mum got me a Kindle for Christmas and it was free with Prime Reading. I figured, why not just give it a go it is now literally free to me and oh my god, hail Amazon Prime.
The Book sets itself up to be something that isn't well structured.

But I grew to love it.
Usually I'm a decently quick reader for someone who has dyslexia anyway and I dont hesitate over words or certain sentences for very long and just take them at face value. But since the layout of the book was so unique, it made me want to actually understand the meaning of the layout more. There's many phrases that I've highlighted throughout that I read multiple times just because the novel wasn't just structured in basic paragraphs. So for that alone, this book stand out to me.
The actual narrative of the book is the first book this year that made me cry. And I mean I was trying so hard to hold back tears but DAMN, I think I fell in love with Gat through the small things he managed to do in such a short amount of time.
Looking back on it now, there are masterfully crafted hints of where the book is leading to, even Johnny points this out near the end and WOW that statement has never been more true.
Reading it entirely from Cadences point of view, I read it as it it was written in the form of a diary and I truely felt just as confused as she did.
I see many writing about how unlikeable the main character is, but I don't really see that? As far as I'm concerned, the author wrote her in a way that was realistic for how a "spoilt white girl" would act when so used to all the things that she has grown up with. Anything that you have in life after a while, you can take for granted, and I think that was actually really well captured and I didn't think anything she said or did was out of character or EXTREMELY dislikeable!
Now, moving on to the only other character I can be bothered to write about, Gat. I have a bad habit of assuming that everyone I read about is white unless stated otherwise. And boy, I have never been put in my place more. I know that this is not anything to be proud of, believe me I'm not, but it is just the assumption I have whenever Reading a description of a character. Honestly though, this book ACKNOWLEDGING that fact and subtly changing descriptions of Gat until practically making it obvious that her G-dad was a racist ***hole really made me hesitate. I think the book tells an important message to acknowledge people for what they are, something I think Cadende learns too. I often see, especially online, to be "raceblind" and to "treat everyone the same" when that simply isn't the case. Obviously treat everyone with kindness and blah blah but seeing people and not trying to fit them into the "normal box" is just as important which this book REALLY showed me. It didn't take up too much of the plot or distract from the overall narrative but I'm glad it was there, and I think its going to be something that sticks with me.

One of the last books I read this year turned out to be one of the very best.
I feel betrayed by this book. I wasn't expecting it to grab my heart so thoroughly or rip it out so completely.
This book was beautifully written. I was transported to that island and I was there with the liars. I don't often read YA contemporary but this book is just stunning. And awful. But beautiful.
I don't think I'll get over this one quickly, it's lodged deep inside.
