God this book pulled at the heart strings, could not put it down. Loved the story but loved the two main characters more!

An interesting fantasy read with multiple outside influences including mythology and religious folklore. High stakes narrative with a strong female protagonist that has flavors reminiscent of Rebecca Roanhorse's Black Sun and Rory Power's In a Garden Burning Gold. The world building can be a little info dumpy, which results in a diluted atmospheric content, but the plot progression is interesting and tense. Lovers of the grump/sunshine trope will enjoy the character banter between Alessa and Dante. A good exploration of religious fervor and an enjoyable debut.

DNF. This is more complicated than I have the bandwidth for right now. Maybe I'll come back later and try this one again.

An Italian influenced fantasy focusing on a girl whose touch can kill? I'm listening.

I loved the idea of this society, where a pair is chosen to fight an incoming siege of (essentially) bugs. It occasionally gave me vibes of The Selection series, though with a fair bit more of sexual tension. Dante, of course, was my favorite character though I did love many of the fonti. However overall the plot was very predictable and I don't see where it'll be going in the next book. But I think that many people new to the genre will be wowed by it!
