Where to start!
Firstly [a:Emily Thiede|20230876|Emily Thiede|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1625932539p2/20230876.jpg] thank you for this!
I cried, like properly, twice. I can not remember the last time I cried because of a book.
Because its easy to picture an italian summer and orchard and limoncelo at first I felt I would miss a journey of discovery for a new world, I had this thought waaay too soon. Beautiful world and a beautiful sentiment.
Something else I dont normally do, reflect on life when reading a fantasy book! This book is a lovely reminder about how important it is to be yourself, everything that is meant to, will fall into place around you as long as your honest with yourself and accept that not everyone shares the same view of the world.
I can not wait for the concluding book already!

Let me first say that I did not hate this book, but I found some issues that I had with it.

First off: the concept of the book was great. I liked the idea of it, I liked that Alessa is a Finestra coming into her powers, but not knowing exactly where it's going wrong, what with 3 dead partners by her hand. I liked Dante for being, well, Dante and the bodyguard relationship going on. I liked the massive fight at the end of the book and how glorious it had been.

But I suppose that's where my likes end. Here's some of the issues I had with the book:
1. This is the main one for me. The book doesn't seem to play out 'actions bear consequences' very well. You could EASILY tug at the reader's heartstrings by twisting the plot, and I absolutely did feel this when I read Dante's goodbye note to Alessa. I was actually tearing up but then. Three. Pages. Later. Just three or so. And Dante is back again?? Honestly, that infuriated me more than I expected because I liked Dante, but how is it that he is saying goodbye but that goodbye is extremely short-lived? There was little in the way of the drama that could potentially happen had he not reappear so soon. This, and also the ending where he is resurrected felt a bit too convenient for me.
2. The other Fontes. While I understood their purpose as Alessa's multiple amplifiers (or whatever it was), the whole of the book felt like it never truly focused on Alessa building relationships with them. For the most part, Alessa is romancing Dante rather than build her powers with the Fontes during the countdown, so I felt like it had been abundantly unnecessary to include that many side characters when there's not a lot of story to them.
3. The dialogue: I felt it was a bit modern for the setting, that threw me off.

There is a plot setup for book 2 (not sure if this series is meant to be a duology or trilogy) and I am interested to see where it could lead. While there were a number of things that bothered me in this book, I will still probably read the second one to see how it progresses.

yeah i really really really fucked with this. it’s mamma mia but with demons, magic, and religious trauma. i absolutely adored our main characters. alessa is so me. she’s so real. and dante is all the classic fantasy love interest tropes you want. he’s wonderful, and their relationship was equally wonderful. it didn’t feel rushed whatsoever, and the growth was really heartwarming to read. plot wise it was super engaging, and while the major points of the second half were predictable, it was because they were set up well and earned. i do wish some of the themes had been explored a bit more, especially in regards to alessa’s repression and how what she’d been told to believe about her own purity damaged her, but im holding out hope that this will be explored more in the next books. and i’m very excited for those next books! overall this was a very fun upper ya fantasy romance.
