I loved this! For me, this was a true Romantasy read! Heavy on the romance, true high fantasy elements, and an engaging plot! So we’ll done!
Alessa is the chosen Finestra, the Gods chose her to bond with a partner and magnify their magic in order to overpower the evil swarms that will attack their island. But Alessa is different, and every partner she has touched so far she has killed. After multiple assassination attempts Alessa takes her safety into her own hands and hires Dante, a marked killer, as her bodyguard. But Dante has secrets of his own. Can Alessa learn to manage her gift before its too late?
A fantastic debut from Emily Thiede! I devoured this book in about two days and loved it. There was the perfect balance between the plot occurring and us learning more about each of the characters. Alessa is a magnificent protagonist, a girl who craves freedom but also who is full of kindness and knows what she must do. Her loneliness due to not being able to touch is so well written. Dante is cynical, moody and snarky, but all in the best way. He is one of the only people who doesn’t treat Alessa differently and so they have a fun relationship. All the characters in this novel were well written and had a lot of depth to them.
The plot itself took many turns that as a reader I wasnt always expecting but greatly appreciated. And it was left wide open for sequels but not on a cliffhanger.
Overall a very strong fantasy debut for Emily Thiede and I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!

This took me a minute to get into but once I did, I was hooked!
As Touch is my love language I really feel for Alessa and how lonely she feels with people being so scared to touch her.
I absolutely adored the developing relationship between Alessa and Dante, the banter between the pair is pure perfection and their relationship is one of the most believable I have read in a fantasy series.
The story itself is an emotional rollercoaster and I loved every minute of the highs and lows and can’t wait to see where the story takes us in the sequel

Ik ben echt een sucker voor mooie edities, en deze Fairyloot exclusive editie van This Vicious Grace is met recht een pronkstuk te noemen: hardcover met gouden details, een prachtige dustjacket, illustraties op de schutbladen en sprayed edges! Maar is de binnenkant net zo mooi als de buitenkant? Finestra Alessa heeft geen tijd meer: haar ‘gift’ hoort de kracht van haar partner te vergroten. In plaats daarvan gaat iedereen die ze aanraakt dood. Met slechts enkele weken om haar eiland te redden van een invasie, moet Alessa alles op alles zetten om haar gift onder controle te krijgen.
This Vicious Grace speelt zich af op een Italiaans eiland. Dit komt terug in de taal: ieder hoofdstuk begint met een Italiaanse zin, en er wordt regelmatig in het Italiaans gesproken door de karakters. Het eiland staat vol met citroenbomen en je rúikt de citrusgeur bijna. Thiede weet hiermee een Italiaanse touch te geven aan deze fantasy YA.
De hele worldbuilding is sowieso molto bene (zeer goed). Alessa is de Finestra, gekozen door de goden. Maar ze moet met haar gift leren om te gaan – want de vijand komt er aan. En hoe de mensen de regels van de goden hebben opgeschreven… Thiede is spot on met haar beschrijvingen.
De spanning op het eiland stijgt en Alessa is haar leven steeds minder zeker. Onder het volk groeit de onrust, en na een aanslag op haar leven besluit Alessa zelf haar eigen beveiliging in te huren. Dante wordt haar bodyguard, maar Dante heeft ook zijn verleden én motieven om mee te werken… Zijn naam is natuurlijk al een goede indicatie voor de bad boy – al is Dante niet zijn échte naam. Er zijn veel geheimen en het verhaal ontvouwt zich op precies het juiste tempo, waardoor je wilt blijven lezen. De spanning tussen Alessa en Dante bouwt op en de chemie tussen de karakters is zó sterk. Het vallen voor je bodyguard geeft me wat Blood and Ash-vibes. Maar de liefde tussen Alessa en Dante is gedoemd om te mislukken…
Alessa moet met haar gift leren om te gaan, want de vijand komt er aan. This Vicious Grace bevat een epische veldslag, waarin vriendschap en opoffering centraal staan om de strijd te kunnen winnen. Het boek draaide als een film af voor m’n ogen door de beschrijvingen. De spanning is zó goed, ik kon echt niet meer stoppen met lezen!

4.5 stars ( lost half a star because as an italian the translation of those quotes made me mad. Sayings are hard to translate I get it so it’s better not to)
To the story! I loved it. I couldn’t stop reading. Dante oh Dante , while I pictured you like the actual Dante Alighieri you were the best. The banter between him and Alessa was so witty!
