frankly, i think anyone would benefit from reading this book. this is absolutely the kind of book that as soon as you start reading and someone mentions anything about a party, conference, etc you're gonna say "have you read the art of gathering?"

not everyone's cup of tea but it was VERY much my cup of tea, i was nodding along the whole read and enjoying the way she makes her case for the way to bring people together. gathering in community is so precious, let's be intentional about it!!!!!!!

I finished this book a few months ago, and reference the best practices in my mind all the time. I specifically remember getting cut in an unruly ski lift line, and thinking about how the ski resort was failing in its host duty to save guests from other guests. This book also encouraged ideas I already felt about wanting to change status quo events like traditional marriage ceremonies. Overall, this book is so needed in the world - I loved it & will be referencing for years to come.

I liked this book a lot. Here are some notes I made of my favorite parts:

The art of gathering

Court in Brooklyn red hook

Page one nyt meeting

More specific meetups more successful

Tea - how is this gathering different from future gatherings

Tips on finding purpose
Zoom out
Drill baby drill - why are you doing what you’re doing
What problem does your gathering solve
What do you want to be different because you gathered

Exclusion - By closing the door you create the room

Who Fit and fulfill the purpose of the gathering

8-12 people intimate
30 party
150 still see everyone (Dunbar tribe number)

The environment
The chateau principle
Displacement

Chill is you caring for you masquerading as you caring for them

Generous authority - exerting authority for the GUESTS ( ex Alamo drafthouse) - how long do you wait?

Capotes masked party

Pop up rules

Dine on blanc

Pop up etiquete (late push ups)

Prepping people for a gathering (sleep no more)

Sprout stories

An invitation to intimacy but depth is a choice (swimming pool)

Good controversy

Heat map (what avoiding that don’t think they are avoiding- sacred cows - what goes unsaid - what protecting and why)

Closing

So cheesey... it felt like ice breaker/youth group energy.
