The second book in the series continues all the aspects of the first that I enjoyed and adds a much stronger plot line in my opinion.
To start with the negatives there was still no queer characters which does make me sad because I would like to see this book hit all the representation. It succeeds with other forms of rep (I love that there are WoC in power and that we see disabled people as well) some of the contention between the characters did become tedious at times and I was confused how the school just forgot about the dangerous Mage they expelled and Barred. This is a bit of a sticky patch in the plot for me.
Now I loved the continued fleshing out of the world and the impact it can have on people. The pressure to perform, the need to please others with your talent, the loss of agency due to your power, and most of all the fear over certain emotions and how they can control you or cause you to lose control. Amelia's journey in this book was very emotional and I loved seeing it written in a way that honored the complexity of the feelings she had about her parents and her father.
There are some darker situations in this book then in the first. The ear worm bit made me gaggy but it was all well done and definitely built suspense and horror at what the Necromuse was doing. The aethetics of the Midnight Orchestra were iconic and this books imagery was great.
Overall this was a fun read and I am excited for the next one. I highly reccomend the audiobooks for this series as they have a full Orchestra score and it's very atmospheric.

the audiobook is phenomenal. i absolutely adore this little series, it’s so fun and cute?? seriously though the audiobook MAKES it. the original music, played by an orchestra, accompanying the story is so so well done.
