Jones is at her best in the Chrestomanci world. Except when she's in Howl's world, that's her best too.
Perfectly magical and fun, with some sly edginess (of course being the most powerful enchanter in the worlds has its responsibilities and drawbacks! of course you didn't notice you were being a jerk because you're an adolescent having a crappy time of things!). The only drawback to this book? No extravagant dressing gowns like in Charmed Life.

I absolutely love the world(s) of Chrestomanci, the writing, the characters. Character and action are perfectly balanced, loose ends more or less tied up, and it's wonderful how well it stands alone or with the series. Those details make it fun and they're used so well to make it unpredictable, it's a prequel but it's also the first. Full of humour and adventure, I love Christopher's dry remarks, he's a joy to read as an adult or child.

I'm noticing a pattern with me and the DWJ I've read: I start kind of slow and maybe have some trouble really getting into it or keeping characters straight or remembering what was happening the last time I read. But then, somewhere between 40 and 60 percent through the book (based on the Kindle percentage), the book becomes awesome and I zoom through a huge chunk of it in one go and only stop because it's so late.

I think it's time for me to stop reading Diana Wynne Jones books. They're all just kinda boring to me, and I just read them because I own a lot of them, and because they're fast reads.
