An interesting but pretty dark children’s book. The pacing is a bit awkward with a slow start and a lot happening very quickly at the end. Not sure how I feel about the end or the sequencing of better and better places each time you die. I’d definitely want to talk that through with my kids if they read it.

Here is my biased opinion (spoilers ahead):
I remember how this book disturbed me as a child and how it left me feeling extremely uneasy and uncomfortable in my skin. I didn't remember a lot of the story other than that there were two brothers that died and then died again.
So I decided to give this book another try. To be accurate I listened to the audiobook this time (and I didn't like the narrator). But even trying not to let this influence my opinion of the book I still didn't like it. I didn't like this black-and-white painted world, I didn't like the characters, I didn't like the story. I still feel uneasy and uncomfortable reading this and I don't see why children should read or even love this book. It's awful. There's suicide. There's no real logic to it and even though I like or even love many of Lindgren's books, this certainly isn't one of them.
