Ada Limon observes the passing of seasons and the everyday occurrences and then renders them in a way that gives them greater meaning and depth. Through animals and nature she explores our relationships to each other and to ourselves.

Beautiful! A work created during the pandemic that I actually enjoyed

"What is it to be seen in the right way?
As who you are?
A flash of color, a blur in the crowd,
something spectacular but untouchable."

“The Hurting Kind” is my first introduction to the twice selected poet laureate, Ada Limón. In a way, her poems remind me of Mary Oliver’s poems: free verse lyric poems about nature and relationships. These are not impossible to understand literary elite poems. These are down to earth poems about ground hogs, lizards, manatees, the death of a grandparent, nostalgia over a former lover, etc.

A standout poem for me was “The End of Poetry.” It is clearly a pandemic poem. Limon essentially states that she’s tired of words and ideas, she wants to feel the touch of a human.
