This book is just... verrrrry dramatic. I think if I'd read it when I was actually 16, maybe the drama would've been fun and not Too Much, so I'd still say this is fine to rec for readers in its actual target age.

Child abuse: two teenagers are caught in magic dirt mounds such that their breathing is constricted, and left trapped but able to breathe, as a form of punishment at one point. The narrative treats this more as like "tough love" than child abuse. Also, a couple things there's not a specific tag for: fire, and parental death.
