This book and all the remaining ones in the series would get 5 stars if Catalina didn't immediately become a magic cop, but I suppose she's doing magic law enforcement for genuinely good and justifiable reasons (stopping dangerous scientific experimentation on humans). Alessandro's thinly veiled disgust for all things Texas - huge cars, huge guns, etc - is refreshingly hilarious. I love how obvious it is to everyone BUT Catalina that he loves her. Also, I appreciate how we dig a little bit more into lore in this half of the series, but still not too much! Overall, I think this is one of the best series I've read ever, and definitely in the top three I've read this year.
Graphic: Death, Gun violence, Violence
Moderate: Death of parent
I LOVE the Hidden Legacy series. A strong and interesting family dynamic, politics, interesting worldbuilding around magic, this series has it ALL. When I realized the second part of the series was going to be about Catalina, I was a little hesitant because I loved Nevada's books so much. However Ilona Andrews really brought a fresh narrator who was distinct enough from her sister and yet so clearly was cut from the same cloth. Paranormal is one of my go-tos when I'm stressed, and this series is definitely I return to time and time again. Can't wait for future books!

The overall feel of this book is similar to Nevada and Rogan's story in the first three books, but I'm definitely not complaining. I mean, who doesn't want to reread their favorite books without having to reread them? I absolutely adored Catalina. She's very similar to her sister Nevada in that they're both strong and independent, but deep down she's more hesitant and insecure because of the nature of her magic. Alessandro is very flirtatious and swoon-worthy, and the chemistry between him and Catalina was chef's kiss. Hoping more people read this so that Catalina's books also get redesigned covers.
The torch is passed to Catalina Baylor, who actually gets her own trilogy, and Sapphire Flames in the next book of the Hidden Legacy series. As I read the first three books in the series, I learned that the books are part of an urban fantasy series where at one time they received a special serum, and as it passed through the blood of the family, they were given magic powers. They had unique skills and lived among regular people and were a law of their own, with a system of laws and actions. As he description says, magic is key.
Catalina is a Prime, and ranks highest as a magic user, and is the Head of her House - again, from the description - and her unique skills kept her in the background. Catalina has the skills to make everyone like her, and thus is able to use her powers to get any information she wants.
Saddened and infuriated by the death of her friend's mother and sister, Catalina steps into her powers and vows to do whatever she can to find out why. In so doing she runs headlong into a man who she once had a crush on, Alessandro Sagredo, who is an Italian Prime. Against her better judgment, Catalina is forced to trust him. Shockingly, Alessandro is immune to Catalina's powers - but not to their shared attraction.
If Catalina gets things wrong she can lose not only her place as Prime of her House, but her family - and what she vowed never to give away - her heart. After all, how could she ever truly know if any man could love her for herself and not be swayed by her magic powers?
I love spending time in this world. In my mind, Catalina had a lot to live up to because in the first three books in the series, I was enamored by Nevada, her older sister, and her endeavors. Could Catalina and her trials - and love - match up in this series by Ilona Andrews? Yes, indeed, she did. I was swiftly carried away by Catalina, all of the magic, the battles, the challenges, the danger, and the inevitable love story.
I had the extra bonus of listening to this as an audiobook narrated by Emily Rankin. She is an excellent narrator and captured the voices, action and emotion of a well-written story. Urban fantasy is not ordinarily a genre I read, but with such skill (yes, using the word again in this review) that the pair of authors that make up the name Ilona Andrews was the best way for me to be introduced to the genre.
I did miss Nevada and Mad Rogan in this story and I would have loved seeing them interact with Catalina. Other than that minor disappointment, I was well pleased with this addition to the series and will definitely be following the series as the next two books are released.
The first three books areDiamond Fire (my combined review can be found here as a Series Review, https://www.robinlovesreading.com/2019/10/series-review-hidden-legacy-series-by.html.) There were also a couple of novellas, and the next book in the series is entitled Emerald Blaze, due for publication in August, and the series will conclude in 2021.

The first three books are
Tout ce que j'attendais de cette nouvelle trilogie/suite. C'était juste épique !
I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the hidden legacy series. We get to see Catalina as she matured into the head of house role and her growth in dealing with the violent aspects of being a house and an investigation agency.
My biggest disappointment is that the next book in the series isn’t already available. Fortunately, I can amuse myself with re-reads until it (or one of the other series) is available. :)
I loved seeing the different sides to Alessandro and look forward to seeing what obstacles are thrown up to drive him and Catalina together. I will admit to missing Nevada and Rogan, but the rest of the family is present and participating. (And yeah, I get why Nevada needs to be background here).
Definitely looking forward to the next book and where Ilona Andrews takes the characters next!

Wish the cover art was more reflective of these books. They're not nearly as cheesy as they look.
#rdven2020
