Once again the Ilona Andrews team has produced an entertaining novel with fabulous characters, incredible world building, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat action. Sapphire Flames includes the authors' trademark sexytimes romance and their snarky, sarcastic one liners that lift the whole story to another level of fun.
While many of the scenarios and themes are similar to the first three installments in the series, having Catalina be the point of view offers up an entirely different perspective. Often times it is a gamble for an author to change the POV of a beloved series, but here I think it entirely works and gives some refreshment to the story as a whole.
Well done team Ilona Andrews. You have once again proven to be worthy of your fans' devotion. I cannot wait until the next book.

I can't wait for the next one!

I love Ilona Andrews and I loved Nevada's books. What I can't figure out is if I really enjoyed this book less, or if because I listened to it on audio, my issues are with the narrator. All of Ilona Andrews other books are read by Renee Raudman and I adore her. But, as is perfectly logical for a new heroine, this book is read by a different narrator, Emily Rankin. I never quite clicked with Catalina, even though the plot has all the trademark quips and amazing fight scenes that I expect. May have to reread this one in book form in a few months and reevaluate.

“Catalina,” Grandma Frida called out behind me. “When you’re done cutting up the body, call me. I’ll help you hide it.” I turned and looked at her. Grandma flexed her arm. “Ride or die.”

I already really liked Catalina going into this. I liked her before I read [b:Diamond Fire|39320167|Diamond Fire (Hidden Legacy, #3.5)|Ilona Andrews|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1530446207l/39320167._SY75_.jpg|60933021]. I was actually pretty eager to delve more into her and Arabella's story and man, was I not disappointed!

This is probably my favorite family/extended family in the UF genre. The only others that come close are the Price clan (from Seanan McGuire's [b:Discount Armageddon|11402002|Discount Armageddon (InCryptid, #1)|Seanan McGuire|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1317332235l/11402002._SY75_.jpg|16334571] series) and I really don't even want to compare them.

The Baylors are so much fun. They are all strange and lovable in very different ways and honestly, I'd read a book starring any of them. I love how everyone in this universe has unique-to-them powers and the politics between Houses. It's like the romanticized Mafia with supernatural abilities and no law enforcement. I love it.

I'm always looking forward to anything the Andrews write. Can't wait for what's next!

Gripping!

I couldn't put it down and, like its predecessors, it was thrilling and fun, witty and engaging. Ilona Andrews is my go to for comfort romance, action and beautiful worlds.

Sapphire Flames takes place three years after the end of Nevada's story in Wildfire. Catalina is now 21 years old and in charge of the Baylor Investigative Agency with her family after Nevada stepped down following her marriage with Rogan. In the years since we last saw Catalina, her family's new House is about the reach the end of the grace period given to new houses.
The shy girl afraid of her own shadow does not make an appearance in this book. In Sapphire Flames we get to see Catalina comfortable in her own skin and leading her family through investigations and death threats. She reminded me of Nevada at times, but still felt like her own well-developed character and honestly I'm pretty put out I have to wait for the next books even longer now.

It is a joy to reunite with Houston and the Baylor family. I had a pleasant time. I found some similarities with Nevada and Rogan's story, especially in the dialogues and the progression of their relationships. Even though I really like Catalina and will definitely read the next book, the first trilogy remains unbeatable for me.

(my only question is how does the title at all apply to this book)
