I think the most interesting thing about this novel is seeing how much my opinion of these types of books has changed in the past 5 years. I remember in school having to read to kill a mocking bird and thinking it was really powerful. Now I can see it for what it was, and this book also.
I had heard from people that this book was transgressive, but those people were wrong. It's in no way transgressive, black people are basically props for the white characters and there is no meaningful engagement on any actual anti-racist idea.
The writing is a bit basic but essentially fine, interestingly I found myself wanting to speak with a southern accent as I read it.
If you liked the movie green book you will probably like this, not for me though.
