Although I enjoyed this reading simply because it expanded on the story of one of my favorite classics, it felt as if it were missing something. I feel as if it didn’t have the same feeling as the first book, although the setting and circumstances were different.

It was strange and heart-breaking to return to this beloved story to find the "timeless" characters have changed. And just as Scout is resistant to things changing, many readers are disturbed by it too. But I think Harper Lee is trying to teach us that nothing is timeless or infallible, even mighty Atticus. Its not as engrossing as the first novel, but still a wonderful world of characters with much more introspective thought required than its predecessor.

So I have been sitting on this for about a week since reading it. One, the publishers should have waited for Lee to have passed before publishing this. There was probably a reason why she kept it lock away. From the terrible story do to a lack of editing from publishers - hence Robinson was found guilty and later killed in Mockingbird, not acquitted for the crime he was charged for to a lack of background information between Mockingbird and Watchman for several characters that have gone and passed with not mention of Boo Radley and let me not get started on the whole "racial attitude" of Atticus. Which with some fine tuning would have put this book in the same league as it predecessor. And in terms of Atticus becoming racist in his old age seem extreme since the first publish book reviews seem to neglect chapters 17 and 18 which address this issue.

I liked this book. It makes me want to go read To kill mockingbird, which is saying something because I hated that book in high school.

Do NOT waste your time.  Harper Lee’s publisher was right in rejecting this.  The entrenched racism is impossible to swallow and Jean Louise is impossibly shallow.  THIS is how kick-ass Scout turned out?  Ick.  Extremely dated, although probably daring for its time.
