What a good suggestion by whomever to write the the backstory and publish it. This book would have been a sensation but I doubt the standard "to kill a Mockingbird" was in the 60's. Read together they really give you more a picture of the times. I don't know why but "To Kill a Mockingbird" is to a stronger well-written story maybe because it doesn't have the sermonizing that this book has in it. This one is still a good.
Harper Lee's voice is so familiar and comfortable. She writes about life without any sugar coating.

I both loved and hated it. I wish I could give it two different ratings but the way it made me feel at the end of the book - though I would have liked to have ended it differently - gave it the high rating. I honestly think Harper Lee was an evil genius. It is both tedious and beautifully written.
I admit, I'm not even a huge fan of To Kill A Mockingbird, but I was curious about this one. Wish I would have skipped it, it was awful, I just finished reading it and I honestly have no idea what it was about.
I think this is a really average book by one of the worlds most famous writers.
I feel like I’ve already forgotten what happens cause I have no strong feelings.
I feel like this was never going to be as good as Lee’s first. But this was stylistically not really giving what Mockingbird gave. It made me like Mockingbird more for sure.

My feelings about the dubious ethics of publishing this novel aside, I think I understand the point that was trying to be made--and would have been made in a more polished version. As someone who spent my childhood in the American South (and for most of it Alabama specifically) and then moved away, I have the same confrontations with members of my family that Scout did with hers. Realizing that the issues are more complex, but that they still boil down to a morality you don't agree with is a tough thing and forces us to confront the ugliest parts of ourselves and others. I think that Go Set a Watchman was supposed to be about that process, something I have no doubt Harper Lee too dealt with. Once you get past some of the clumsier writing (drafts are never the best version of a novel) that message is there.
