I placed a hold on this book a week ago, because the idea of going through my to read list on here and seeing if the library had anything was still new and special and brilliant. went to pick up this book and five others earlier today, because I have no chill whatsoever. Ended up deciding on reading this one first, because Schwab hasn't let me down yet.
Fast forward through dinner, a really shitty movie, and a couple hours with my nose buried in this book and I am just. Sold. Everything that Schwab produces, from now on. Mine.
The premise of this was fantastic, her characters, as always, had this really specific bite to them. And while I will say that I prefer her more adult persona, this was some really solid YA. 10/10, would imbibe again.
I had an absolute love affair with [bc:Vicious|13638125|Vicious|Victoria Schwab|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1362495700s/13638125.jpg|19250870] and although I had read The Archived last year, I really didn't remember much about it. It warranted a revisiting before embarking onto book 2, [bc:The Unbound|13638131|The Unbound (The Archived, #2)|Victoria Schwab|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1361898093s/13638131.jpg|19250879].
Imagine if everyone's whole life was kept on file, so to speak, in a vast place known as The Archive. Something that looks like your body would be there, but it wouldn't really be you. Not a ghost, not a real person, something in between. Something that holds every single moment of your life, right up until your death. It's called a History. And sometimes, they wake up.
Mac is a girl, chosen by her grandfather to take his place as Keeper after he dies. Her job is to patrol the hallways that separate the Archive from the outside world. This is a place called the Narrows. It's also where Histories that have inadvertently woken up wind up. Mac must capture them and return them back to the Archive before they can reek havoc on the normal world.
After her brother is killed in a hit and run, Mac's family moves to an old hotel that has been revamped into apartment living. It's there that she meets Wesley. The two of them form a tight bond that I cannot say much more about without being spoilerbitchy. I adore Wes. Plus, he wears guyliner.

The relationship between Mac and her grandfather was one that hit every emotional button. I loved Da.
I am not ready.
I am not ready.
I am not ready.
"I cant do this without you, Da"
"You can. And you have to."
"What if I mess up?"
"Oh, you will. You'll mess up, you'll make mistakes, you'll break things. Some you'll be able to place together, and others you'll lose. That's all a given. But there's only one thing you have to do for me."
"What's that?"
"Stay alive long enough to mess up again."
There is a tiny hint of a love triangle which didn't bother me all that much. A small form of insta-lust as well. This was done in a way that I could understand the reasons why it happened. Mac is totally kick-ass but I felt she was missing something. I couldn't bring myself to really feel for her, even though I wanted to. I am hoping she is able to evolve in the next book. Some things were predictable but all in all, the book is enjoyable. It's just not the love affair I wanted.
On a side note, I simply could not avoid my imagination picturing Mac's hotel of residence like this:
That's not a bad thing.

This is definitely a YA book nothing wrong with that... I see it though because the elements of the metaphysical/alternative reality is really solid… But the teen angst will probably translate better when it gets made into a series.
And if by any chance you two are on a kick out of reading books about libraries you should know that the book the Starless Sea began this odyssey for me and thus far none of the library books I have read has even come close to the gloriousness of that book.
This seems a bit fair to Miss Victoria Schwab who is book shouldn’t be held up against every other book written about library‘s when in fact her library is a fascinating twist in that it is a library of people history after they have died... so much that at all tickles your fancy you should give this book a read!
