I can not say enough bad things about this book. I only hope the author was on acid when it was written.
This book BROKE my heart. Like. Multiple times. I recommend this book to everyone. Its so well written and so well paced. The third part was somewhat outlandish but not less enjoyable or gripping.
The turns in the tale really threw me off when they came. But this book, i have to give a thousand props to the author for this, was so relatable and so HUMAN. It was so familiar and so visceral. When the main character, brilliant Warner cries, i cried. When he was angry i felt angry, his happiness, frail and rare as it was also made me happy. The amount of empathy you feel for these characters, Warner, his sister Petal (what a champion) and best friend Usher (you deserved WAY better) are very easy to empathise with. Their motivations, while not necessarily those that the reader might agree with, were easy to understand why.
More than anything this book is a painful and descriptive reminder that life doesn't owe you anything. That life doesn't do diddly squat for a huge "class" of people and we just dont realize it. The system is self serving and will screw over whomever tries to deviate. Its a tough book to read at certain points. When emotions shift you shift. It was so funny then so sad.
I loved this book. Will reread it and have already recommended it. Have students read it. Have anyone in any country read it. Its more uncomfortably familiar than you realize. Let it shake you out of your comfortable routine and thoughts.

I think I have to give it five stars. This was probably one of the most intriguing reads that has crossed my path in a long time. I saw that a new title by Jesse Andrews was coming out and I immediately knew I had to get my hands on it (ignoring the towering tbr pile around me).
My mind has not yet recovered from the world he has created within these pages, but what I can say is WOW. That was different. I did not expect that to go where it did. The concept was so unique and different and clearly mirroring some of what is going on today. What and interesting way to conceptualize the vast difference across socio economic status and present situations and tie in crazy adventure and shenanigans. This book is a little bit insane and a lot but brilliant and My brain cannot handle that ending right now.
Just wow.
Thank you Amulet books and Netgalley for sending me this arc and giving me the opportunity read this and review it.

I have very mixed feelings about this one. I had a hard time connecting with the mIn character, but the audiobook was well narrated and helped draw me in. I'm impressed with the world building, and I think Munmun definitely shows how hard it is for those in poverty to get out of poverty. We"re discussing this at Fountain of Youth ( a book club for Adults who read YA) on Sunday, and I can't wait!

More later, but right now I will say that this hot hot satire made me extra sad that a bum I gave a Luna bar to said "I haven't had a seizure in two months! This is going to be my year!"

what a cool concept
Very good look at socioeconomic differences, clearly distinguished by size in this world. I found it slow going and it hasn't gone out much in my library yet. I thought it was good, but it may be a hard sell for pleasure reading.
The first half of the story was relatively okay, and then the second half of the story kind of spun out of control. The story was messy, and it went in so many different directions, at the end, I wasn’t even sure what was going on. The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying.
I think the concept of the sorta real world was pretty creative, but the storytelling got out of control.
Some of the topics that was covered were covered well, but the messy storytelling brought the book rating down a lot for me.
