Skip is a sheriff enjoying his small town living. The town he serves is thrown into chaos when an earthquake unleashes an ancient beastie hellbent on slaughter. Lucky for Skip a Game Warden named Jay Little Hawk is well versed in First Nation’s Shamanism. He knows what this creature is and more importantly how to kill it. The duo will have to work together to defeat the evil of “The Crota”!

I sure do love a good creature feature. “The Crota” is definitely a product of its time and as such can come across rough. You will know what I mean pretty quickly. Despite this I enjoyed the novel and it kept me hooked until the very end. Definitely one of the more intelligent creature features I’ve read this year.

This is why it pays to read diverse horror. Drawing from indigenous folklore, Crota is a unique, harrowing, and gory creature feature that feels so refreshing, despite being written a quarter-century ago. It backloads a tad too much of its exposition, and demands the reader come with some heavy suspension of disbelief, but the way it weaves Native American culture into an otherwise by-the-book monster mash is a delight.

It's easy to see why Goingback is a favorite at of the Stokers, and he's a writer that deserves so much more attention than he gets. I know I'll be adding more of his work to my TBR.

That was a neat story, and especially liked the Native American point of view.
