Good introduction to the subject. I really, really enjoyed this and plan on reading it again. However, I highly recommend consistently looking up more modern reconstructions and illustrations of animals mentioned. Appearances change quickly with how fast science is developing!

Not as enthralling as his previous book on dinosaurs, but that is likely because the early stages of mammalian evolution are not as prevalent in the zeitgeist as dinosaurs. The last few chapters are really interesting as they pertain to things like megafauna and more recognizable animals.
