Wauw! Sådan en af de bøger man er nødt til at læse langsomt. Man kan slet ikke skøjte igennem dem.
Smukt og fint sprog og fyldt med både kærlighed og grusomheder.

Such beautiful and lyrical writing depicting the plight of brides who were shipped from Japan to the US to the husbands. . It’s an account of the lives the women settled for and the aftermath of the bombing. The women came from all over Japan to leave to the US. The POV was quite interesting. It felt like a unison of voices. Life in the US was not exactly the American Dream for these women. They worked very labour intensive jobs. They ploughed on with hopes that their children would lead a better life later.

The Japanese viewed the Americans as enemies and the Americans lumped the Japanese along with the Mexicans,Chinese and African Americans as people of colour. Many Americans didn’t differentiate between the overseas Japanese and citizens who were going to college. It was really sad to read about. This book is a shared experience of the Japanese diaspora.

Goodness gracious, this book is so beautiful. I just finished it and think I may pick it up and read it again right away.  Like a poem, rhythm, word choice and simplicity build effortless images and character sketches. It broadened my understanding of my American History and heritage. I loved every moment, even the frequent painful ones.

I enjoyed this, but wouldn't call it a novel. While it is written from a distinct POV, there is no "character" to follow, and that was a let down to me. It felt more like a long, long poem. Which would have been great if I had been wanting to read a long, long poem, but I'd wanted to read a novel and fall in love with the characters and follow them through this story instead.
