The Road Home was the 2008 winner. It’s the story of Lev, an economic migrant from an Eastern Europe country who settles in England in order to find work, his life at home including the factors that caused him to leave and the ups and downs of the life he slowly builds for himself in England. Lev was a complex and flawed character and some of his actions were unforgivable, yet I still wanted him to succeed. I loved seeing him eventually find his passion and follow his dream. I appreciated the light this book shone on perhaps a lesser known form of prejudice in the UK - that against Eastern Europeans. The writing was strong and the story held my attention from beginning to end.
