Loved the concept of this one but the execution just fell flat for me. The ending felt like we didn’t actually resolve anything and just kind of went “it is what it is” 🤷♀️ which makes it hard to then care about the story overall. Also I will never fully enjoy a book where the dog unnecessarily dies especially when that dog is a PUG 😡
Moderate: Vomit and Animal death

“It was hard not to feel like there must be magic, that there must be spirits and ghosts and just ‘something else’ out here, just for us, even just for now.”
This was hands down the best book I’ve read this year. I don’t remember the last time I was this moved by a novel. It’s also been a long time since I finished a book and was sad it was over.

This was my first book by Ms. Dimaline, and she has me hooked. This writing was like cutting and edgy and poetic and just so incredibly raw and real. It felt so authentic to the rough-as-hell years of middle and high school. And the exploring of the sexuality and the fascination with dark things. I loved it all. I highly recommend this one.
Graphic: Grief, Death of parent, Pregnancy, Abandonment, Animal death, and Death
Moderate: Mental illness, Bullying, and Panic attacks/disorders
Minor: Murder, Alcohol, Confinement, and Sexual content

Very melancholic and melodramatic in a way I would’ve loved as a teen.

Wow! This book was beautifully written. The flow and imagery of the sentences are so elegant and captivating.
Funeral Songs for Dying Girls, follows Winifred, a sixteen-year-old girl who lives with her father and obese dog in a cemetery. She's an outcast, "weird", and determined to save the cemetery so she and her father can stay in their apartment on the property. How? After a few accidental "ghost sightings", in which she was mistaken for a ghost, she believes this may be the key to staying in their home, especially after running into a real ghost. When Winifred learns more about her new ghost friend, Phil, she realizes she doesn't want to exploit her. She has to decide what's more important, her home, or her new friend.
I was wowed from the beginning, Dimaline quickly pulled me in with the poetic feel of the language used in this novel. I definitely recommend this book!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in return for an honest review of this novel.
