Dr. Jen Miller is back to work after she lost her husband Jeremy six weeks ago while on a skiing trip in Switzerland. She is also pregnant because of a one-night stand she had while at the medical conference in Oxford and now that the guy, Scott, shows up at her practice and wants to be a part of Jen’s and the baby’s lives. Can Jen trust Scott or does he have ulterior motives ?
The Trapped Wife by Samantha Hayes is a fast paced psychological thriller. . This book was certainly not what I was expecting, a story that twists and turns so fast and so abruptly that it made me question everything that I thought I knew.
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

A great psychological thriller has multilayer. That is an understatement for this book. Just as I thought I got it all figured out, I was wrong. The ending was full of surprises that truly left me satisfied as well as amazed me. There were many layers to the ending. Jennifer's character had depth and was well developed. Evan and ac were such a pair of intriguing characters. As it was set in the past for Evan and Mac, it does make me think throughout the book as to who they were as adults. Samantha Hayes is the master of surprises. This book is a must-read!

I'm pretty sure I was screaming in my head at the main character, Jen, when she feels she has to be nice when Scott, the man from her one-night stand shows up. She's an intelligent woman, a doctor, grieving for her husband who died a short while ago. Why does she put up with his attempt to wriggle into her life? But there are so many complications surrounding that night that result in what happens next.
At first, I was confused by the intervening chapters that take place in the past, though I was pretty sure I knew who one of the characters was as an adult. And there's a little bit of a red herring that allows you to believe that Scott is looking for revenge. While some of the ending was predictable, the twists will knock you over in the end.
Some parts of the book are truly cringeworthy, and I won't give them away since they are part of the reveal, but just note that there should be trigger warnings. All in all, this was a tense read, and yes, comparisons to Gone Girl are accurate!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance reader's copy.

Jen Miller, a respected physician, is now a widow and has a teenaged son. What is more is that she has found out that she is pregnant. However, for several months, even before her husband's passing, they were not intimate. Who is the father of her baby? Why is that so unclear to her? As she starts to piece things together, her best friend Rhonda is also doing the same.
Intriguingly, Jen soon finds that she must keep a secret, although she is not even sure of why she has to keep the father of her baby a secret. Then there is the fact about why Jen and her husband were having problems before he died. Factor in her teen son and Rhonda's teen daughter and nothing at all is clear in this story. In fact, convoluted is the best word to use for this story, especially with regard to another character.
Secrets and lies, as well as the past and the present that soon spirals out of control leaves Jen in an incredible quandary. Then there is the reason why this story is named The Trapped Wife, but I am not going to mention any of that in this review.
As this story evolved, it was like pieces of a puzzle falling into place. It is often said that a story is full of twists and turns and that is certainly the case with this thrilling book. The tension in this story was top notch. However, the final twist really knocked me for a loop, one that I never saw coming and the conclusion truly shocked me. Kudos to a fabulously written story that will not soon be forgotten.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The main character was completely unrelatable and infuriating. No woman ever would allow this BS... also, why did I need to know every monotonous detail her her day? Annoyed.

Told from multiple view points and two timelines... It's hard to find any character to care about.
Who wrote the blurb, because it needs to be re-written.
This had a slow start and I almost DNF-ed it because it was soo boring. It started picking up halfway through, so I persevered.
Regarding the writing:
Jen’s chapters were written in first-person and Rhonda’s chapters were written in third-person and I got super confused when the narratives first switched. I got used to it after that though.
This is a personal preference but I really dislike it when the author teases at something (not subtley), but doesn’t tell you what it is straightaway. Just do it subtley, no need to be so heavy-handed on the foreshadowing.
Regarding the story:
There were clues to lead the reader to think a certain way, but I had my suspicions.
While the story slowly unravelled, I managed to figure out what Jeremy did so it didn’t come as a shock to me.
I was also able to figure out roughly what really happened to Jeremy so no surprises there as well.
Jen really frustrated me. She finally had this one string of coherent thought that actually made the most sense out of everything that she did, but then she went nahhh. I wanted to call the police on her behalf.
Also, the gender thing? Mehh, not feeling it.
I read the author’s notes after the story ended and she did mention something about the character not quite having his reality aligned because he desperately needed a friend. While I can see how it could definitely possibly happen in real life, it was executed poorly in this book, that when that information was dropped, my jaw didn’t. Instead, I was mildly annoyed and went ‘whaaaat’, complete with an exasperated look on my face. (However, I read this great review beforehand so that was why I wasn’t shocked.)
The one thing I enjoyed was that this book could fall under the ‘unreliable narrator’ trope (which I enjoy).
Kieran and Caitlin were really sweet kids too.
I probably will not be reading more from this author. I read a lot of the reviews on here and it seems like people are impressed by how twisty and turny this was. It also seems like her other books are similar and this just didn’t go that way for me.

A wife struggling with her husband's sudden death.
Jennifer returns to work after taking weeks to help her 16 yo son adjust and grieve. Though Jennifer loved her husband, she had suspected he was having an affair for quite some time.
And of course the positive pregnancy test - a result of a drunken, hazy night while at conference.
Flashbacks add mystery to the plot - Evan a young boy from an abusive home, Mac also desperate for a friend.
Lots of great twists, well done ending. Great read.

Read this book for the ending. It is well, well worth it.
Samantha Hayes did it again. She wrote another awesome mystery book with great twists and intricate family plots.
The book has mainly two timelines that follow the story of a lonely boy who has a hard time finding or making friends and the story of Jen who recently lost her husband in an avalanche.
Jen is suspecting her husband was cheating on her. One night, when she was having a few drinks with her colleagues after attending a conference in Oxford, she has a one night stand with a stranger and, as a result of that night, she is pregnant. Recently widowed and pregnant with a teenage son that barely communicates with her, things are not looking good, And then her one night stand shows up at her door.
The book has a slow, slow pace until the last third when things really pick up and the story gets absolutely great. I did struggle with the first part of the book as I was not liking Jen and didn't understand her decisions, that seemed to me to be beyond naive. But it all made sense in the end.
This is one of Samantha Haye best books so far. Usually books that start slow have a hard time compensating and making it up in the end but this one delivered and then some. An excellent read!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this great book.
