Good summertime reading. Probably more like 3.5 stars for what it is — I enjoyed going on the ride, but five years from now I’ll pick it up in a bookstore and wonder if I read it.

Although I was skeptical of the writing style at first, I found myself being sucked in by all the metaphors and allusions. Megan Abbott has a beautiful way of weaving in plot twists that are what you thought would happen, but not quite, making every death ebb into your consciousness, making you feel just as empty and vaguely confused as the main characters. You feel this sense of yearning throughout the book- Diane is a character whose writing I admire deeply. Incredibly loyal, and well meaning, yet scared of consequence and the meaning of her own actions. Anyways, yes. Excellent book. Will be looking over for some of my favorite Diane moments.

The ladies were so gay and yet none of them were lesbians..Also quite predictable and basic plot structure etc.
Maybe it’s the science nerd in me, but this was her best book so far. I enjoyed the characters and their interactions. The relationship between Diane and Kit was particularly interesting...and very sad.
What saved this book from 2 stars was the revelation at the end. Otherwise it was pretty easy to guess the plot line.
Stories are told in a single sentence. I would kill to write these kinds of character descriptions.
You kind of don’t know what is happening and then you do and then you don’t.
Not one of my favorite Abbott books but has a mostly satisfying arc.
