well written and executed, but i can't help but feel like it would've been more resonant if we spent more time with diane and kit as characters instead of being constantly explicitly told how evil and sick diane is. still, enjoyable read
3.5 stars and very melancholic. I... feel for both main characters – and I don't know how I feel about that. You're not supposed to empathize with a sociopath, are you? At least, not in the black-and-white print world of novelized murder. More to the point, was she a sociopath? Did she really lack a conscience? But really, that's not the point; the point is, I feel for her. I feel for her not-a-friend. And that alone deserves the extra half-star.

Kit had always had modest plans for her life but then Diane Fleming shows up. Diane's brilliance sparked something in Kit and the two developed an unlikely friendship. Then Diane tells Kit a secret. A deep, dark secret. (DUN DUN DUUNNNNNNN.)
10 years later Kit is fulfilling her scientific dreams, thinking she's put Diane behind her. But then Diane comes to the lab where Kit works to compete for a spot in the Job of a lifetime.
First of all, I would like to say how pretty the cover is. I saw it on my Kindle the first time and it was in black and white so, at first, it looked like a bony hand. Then I saw it was a burning flower. While that image was pretty, I feel like it didn't have anything to do with the book. Nonetheless, cover is 5/5.
When I started this I was super confused because of the way the story is told. It is told in "Then" chapters and "Now" chapters. It took me a while to get used to that style.
By the time I had gotten used to the style, the story was still developing. In the beginning, I got kind of a contemporary feel and almost romance when Alex and Kit go out. (I'm being vague cause I don't wanna spoil the book before it comes out.)
But then there was an accident. DUN DUN DUN. It was at that point that I got a murder mystery feel. And from then on I was hooked.
The writing style was okay. The whole book was mostly character driven, which was a little annoying because I prefer plot driven books.
It was about a three star book until the end. As bland as the beginning was, the end made up for that.
Bottom Line: A nice, quick read with a hooking ending. I will definitely be re-reading.
P.S. I don't see how the title relates to the story. But at one point Diane says:
"'Give me your hand,' Diane says. 'Hurry.'" and I was like:

I’ve gone off thrillers completely recently but this is one of the best psychological thrillers I have ever read. Megan Abbott owns this genre now as far as I’m concerned (with a little bit of room for Jessica Knoll).

Creepy and heart breaking and crazy all rolled into one. Megan Abbott you are a great story teller!
A novel about 2 old friends. One has an old secret that the other helps her hide. They end up working in a lab together and have a strange connection to the woman who runs the lab. It was meant to be more mysterious than it was. I really didn't like the characters. The women work in a lab that is trying to discover a cure who severe pms, so it is meant to be a girl power book but it fails.
The atmosphere of the lab was spot on for anyone who has ever been in academia. I had nightmares.
