Eh. While I am 22.5, the “essential read for your 20s” doesn’t really apply to me for a variety of reasons and I sort of wanted to punch the author at a few moments.  I would be incredibly interested in Alderton’s fiction, though.

This is why female friendships are so so important. Loved this!

I appreciate the message of this book. At its core it’s about learning to love yourself and accepting yourself for who you are. Learning not to focus on the romantic relationships but the friendships that are still full of love.

Unfortunately, this advice is only focused on for the last 20% of the book. This advice felt thought out and based on experience and quite valuable. The rest of the book is moments from the author's adolescence and twenties. It was interesting to see someone with similar anxieties to myself approach their problems in a vastly different way. I think their journey wasn’t relatable but educational. It removed any FOMO I've had about not being a partier in high school or college.

Overall, I felt disconnected from these anecdotes and wasn’t really invested in the author's story. It wasn’t until the advice section pulled everything together that I felt this book have the impact it was attempting to have.

I think I’m already emotional because I’m graduating and everything is changing so I fear this review may be quite sappy. I chose to read this because every book Instagram real talks about how amazing it is but I usually have pretty low expectations for those book recs. However this book was so fitting- maybe it’s because I’m 21 and on the precipice of the uncertainty of  my 20s. I so deeply value my female friendships and Dolly captures how meaningful they are beautifully. To be understood and to want to understand. I understand the hesitance and insecurity of romantic relationships coupled with the security of a roommate chat. I’m in a relationship and I still have my friendships but dolly is right- they have changed. This isn’t bad, but it’s different. I’m not sure where I’m going with this but I guess female friendship helped me learnt to love myself before I was loved but being loved also taught me that I’m whole? Not sure I even understand what I’m writing but on the bright side love is confusing even when you are 28. I hope to feel like sureness and unwavering love Dolly grew to have for herself (I’m still working on it)- until then I’ll keep trying!
