Joan made a promise to her dying mother and has set on a journey to deliver a message to Scotland disguised as a boy. Campbell jumps to a boy's defense when he sees him being beaten by thieves. However, the boy isn't a boy and Campbell finds himself smitten. However, when he arrives home with a bride all the prospectives ones his mother has gathered are not happy and someone is determined to clear the field.

I am not sure where the issue was, but I DNF at about 50%. I think it was too angsty/dangerous situations for me.

I'm not sure I would have finished this book if I weren't reading it on audio. I liked the beginning but it dragged in the middle and end.
4-4.5 | I kind of have mixed feelings. I liked the FL and the story and how it came to be, however I didn’t like their initial “romantic” interaction. I mean Cam essentially didn’t ask he just did without considering his partners position especially in this time period where women don’t get a lot of options. I know he wouldn’t have left her like that but like still would have preferred even a “can I?” “Sure” moment. So I disliked that but I liked the story so mixed feelings and that’s why it lost a star.

To Marry A Scottish Laird has been sitting on my TBR list for a while. I started it and only got to the end of the first chapter before I set it aside for a couple of weeks because of several must read now books that caught my attention and got me all distracted. To be fair, this happens to me occasionally and it’s not the book’s fault. Then just the other day I was in the mood for a some Scottish historical loving so I picked it back up again.
Quick warning, my review will contain slight spoilers.
Joan, our heroine, is traveling from England to Scotland in order to fulfill a deathbed request from her mother when she is suddenly beset by thieves. Luckily she is rescued by a big, brawny Scotsman. In the middle of the fight he is injured quite badly and Joan has to take matters in her own hands and nurse him back to health. When Cam wakes up several days later he very thankful that the lad he rescued stuck around long enough to make sure he was back on his feet. So he offers to help him reach his destination and fulfill his deathbed promise. It’s not until he sees the boy bathing one evening that he realizes that he is really a she and has disguised herself for protection while on the road. That’s when things turn from sweet to sexy very quickly. Seriously, these two start getting it on within the first 20-25% of this book. I was actually kind of taken aback by how swiftly they became lovers and by how much sex they have in such a short amount of page time.
That quote is taken at 26% in and I was right there with Joan wondering what was going on. Mainly because the time spent between when Cam discovers she’s a she and he decides to jump under his plaid with her and fulfill all her virgin fantasies is only a few chapters. And she’s still black and blue from her beating AND she’s not at her hygienic best. That doesn’t seem to matter to Cam though, once he has sex with Joan for the first time he can’t seem to stop himself from doing it over and over and over. No talk before, during or after, just lots of sexy times. And sleep. Cam likes to fall asleep right afterward. This actually made me chuckle a little bit.
Despite the voracious craving she has for her Scotsman, Joan has very real fears of the birthing bed and has no desire to become pregnant with his or anyone else’s child. She has spent her life training as a healer and midwife under her mother and has seen some truly awful things. Cam has the same issues after watching his wife slowly die, unable to bring forth their babe into the world. This plays a major theme with the two of them and how they view their relationship. Cam and Joan ultimately decide to stay lovers and take their time heading to their ultimate destination, the MacKay clan. They get to know each other, indulge in their lust and begin a real friendship.
Then they get to MacKay land and finally hand over the scroll given to Joan by her mother. That’s when things get crazy between them again. I really don’t want to indulge in all the ways things get a little nuts, just be aware that there’s jealousy, a semi- forced marriage, a few deaths and a big mystery to solve. Also, lots of confusion between these lovers about how they feel and what they want from each other. The sex is mostly off page, which was kind of odd considering the first half of the book, but I found this part to be more interesting. These two ended up being a fun couple. Cam is slightly clueless sometimes, but he is sweet and says some rather wonderful things to his lady in the end. Joan is very likable and smart and rather tough in her own way, even if she has to get past her many insecurities to finally see it. There is also a very lovely epilogue that I was thankful was included. It wrapped everything up very nicely.
I found this to be a fluffy, light historical that turned out to be an easy read once I got past the almost too sexy beginning and allowed myself to fall into the story. Final Grade- C+

Such a fun read! theres a part where she falls/jumps off a horse, and he's like, "did you do something to upset the horse?" She says, "nay." He asks her another question, and she says "nay" again. The whole time I'm just like "nEiGh" and it was so funny XD
