I felt TO’s There, There was gorgeous, heartwrenching, and masterful. This was very much the opposite for me. I felt like this was disjointed, unfocused, and confusing. I was really looking forward to reading this, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.

I really liked There There and want to read this, but I need something more light hearted right now.

I loved There, There and loved the beginning of this one, but the second half really did not do it for me. Some of the narration very much felt like an adult writing children and less like actual children, and a lot of the story was about getting high and descriptions of addition / getting high that made me kind of uncomfortable because of how pervasive it was in the narrative.

I liked how deeply and clearly connected a lot of the characters felt to each other, and the meditations on how family history affects future generations. I wish there was more time spent with the older members of the family though. I also liked that the ending was kind of hopeful, as with all of the talk of addition, I was not holding out hope for any good ending lol.

Orange's ability to write lyrically and draw parallels subtly between people who are far removed is very nice, and I appreciate the way that he does it.

I would say that this is in part a sequel to There, There (which I was not really aware of going in) and even though I saw some other reviews saying you can read it by itself, I think there is more to get out of it reading the two of them together. I wish that I had revisited it, at least in some way, before going into this because many of the characters are the same. With this, the way that this book is both a prequal and a sequel is interesting, and possibly not in a good way lol, I am not sure that I personally liked that as a concept.

Overall, I would recommend, especially if you have read There, There.

I listened to the audiobook read by Shaun Taylor-Corbett, MacLeod Andrews, Alma Cuervo, Curtis Michael Holland, Calvin Joyal, Phil Ava, Emmanual Chumaceiro, Christian Young, and Charley Flyte.
