a fragmented story read in bits and pieces over a two week vacation was maybe not the most ideal way to read this book. i imagine sitting down and reading it straight might let you form a constellation out of this collection of intergenerational stories (the wandering stars??!!), but i simply did not have that luxury!

though it was good to have this book in my mind driving through northern California, where much of the book is set. america is so overwhelmingly vast that you feel sort of sorry for how much of it has been mapped, colonized, industrialized. sometimes the urban landscape feels like a descendant of an old atrocity…i understand why this family felt like they needed to pay a price to gain autonomy, to experience freedom

Starts strong, but ends up being very directionless in the 2nd half. Drugs, dealing with the aftermath of what happened in the first book, characters just wasting away, which is maybe the point. But it doesnt make for a captivating read.

I did not enjoy this book as much as the first one. And it was very sad.
