I get so caught up in Kellerman's writing, I forget the time. Stayed up way too late and woke too early to finish this one. Looking forward to number three.

It's interesting to read books written and set before 9/11 to see all the changes in what we now consider norms.
Pay phones and pagers
Walking right up to airport gates
Research by looking through boxes of documents
There are more Jewish words and customs than I am comfortable with, but that's just a lack of knowledge on my part. Good to step out of my Christian upbringing more often.

Peter Decker is an asshole in this one. An absolute sea of red flags. He's violent to suspects, cruel to witnesses, and he gives Rina the silent treatment and destroys a few of her things.

The mystery itself is good, if graphic. It's great to see so much use of dental forensics. I'm very interested to see if Kellerman manages to redeem Decker in any way, or if she sets Rina up for a lifetime of making excuses.

I recently had read Faye's latest book and was trying to remember how Rina and Peter got together in
the first place. I read this book many, many years ago but it still holds up. It's funny to see how things have changed since this book was written - so much smoking, having to find a phone to make a call, sharing computers... We've come a long way in some things but Peter's detective work is as dedicated as ever.
As a whole this is a great murder mystery. On top of that is the love story and the issue of the religious differences between Rina and Decker. They are two strong characters who stand up for what they believe and their relationship is what elevates this about your standard murder mystery.

I really had trouble getting into this one, perhaps because I didn't read the first one in the series. (This book was orphaned at my house after a visit by a family member ;) All of the dialogue felt very forced and fake, and the religious elements of the plot felt very forced. I know the author is very Orthodox and is perhaps trying to expose readers to her religion, but you really need reference book or a dictionary to know what some of the characters are talking about in some scenes.

I don't think I'll be checking out the rest of this series any time soon...
