This was a really lovely novel about a sister relationship and an exploration of culture. The illustrations is lovely and the way it talks about dia de Las Muertos is very accessible and sweet!

I like the representation of a chronic illness (cystic fibrosis). It's there and intertwined into the story well. The art and colors are beautiful. I like the approach to Dia de Los Muertos and family.

I'm glad other reviewers flagged what I did in this book - that the story in it is not Telgemeier's to tell. While stories about Dia de los Muertos are great and should be told, I would have loved for it to have been told by someone with Mexican heritage, not by someone who has been part of celebrations but is not Mexican themselves. This is not to say it can't be included somewhere, but a story entirely about it is not great coming from a non-Mexican author. It's the same discomfort I would feel reading a story centred around Passover written by a non-Jewish person - it's just not your story to tell. Sure, maybe your characters attend a seder in your story, but the seder shouldn't be the central part of the story.

I also don't know a ton about American relationships with their Indigenious people, but the use of a mission as a central location (and one of celebration and joy), doesn't seem great. Missions were where Catholic missionaries converted Indigenious people to Catholicism... So similar to using a Residential School as a setting. Again, if this were an Indigenious author reclaiming a place of trauma as a place of celebration, that would be one thing, but that's not what this is.

I'm really, really sad about what this book turned out to be. The relationship between Cat and Maya was wonderful, the fact that a main character had Cystic Fibrosis was great representation that I'd never seen before, but man the rest of the story was just not great. I'm grateful to other reviewers for sharing their insight and teaching me more about topics I didn't know (specifically the missions) - this book was almost worth it for the lessons I learned outside of it.
