“I'd never given up on anything in my entire life. I couldn't start now, not when my life seriously depended on me not losing it.”
I'm reading this after ‘Pure’, so I am already familiar enough with this fictional world and the characters. As a prequel to Half-blood, this book doesn't add too much to the story. It's a quick read and honestly could have been added to the first book.
Alex and her mother are on the run, Alex is doing her best to blend in with the mortals but also doesn't accept bullshit. Try to lay hands on her and she'll kick your ass. Unfortunately, as we already know, the daimons find them and she has to run. We see Alex at her lowest and trying to survive, all the while being as strong as possible.
There is a flashback to when she was subjected to an examination at the age of seven. She's never felt comfortable with people touching her without consent, however innocent it may be. Her inner dialogue was fascinating and empowering! If only every child had the freedom to speak their thoughts.
“If I didn't touch someone then I believed they shouldn't touch me.”
And ohh!!! The worst pick-up line I've ever heard, lol:
“Damn girl. Is your daddy a thief? Well, then who stole those diamonds and put them in your eyes?”
And Alex’s reply:
“Was your mom a gardener? Because a face like yours belongs planted on the ground.”
Badass! :)
