This is a prequel, but I accidentally read this after reading Half-Blood. Maybe this book would have felt more interesting/important if I had read it in the right order, but it feels like fluff. It's not necessary to understand the characters or backstory. This is an optional read that just shows in more detail what happened to Alex before the sentinels picked her up at the start of Half-Blood.

After hearing some awesome things about this new series by Jennifer Armentrout, I decided to give this a go. Especially since this prequel is a freebie on the publisher's website. So why not!<

Right off the bat, I can see the heavy similarities between this world and the Vampire Academy world. Alex is like Rose in a lot of ways. She's strong, sassy and sarcastic (my three favorite S's for heroines). The dynamics of the pure-bloods, half-bloods, and daimons is also very much like the moroi, dhampirs, and strigoi. Pretty much you could switch out the vampires in VA for demigods and you've got Covenant!

But that's not necessarily a bad thing. We also have some big differences so I don't think she's necessarily copying VA, but for me personally the similarities are actually a good thing. I miss VA a lot so this could very well help to fill that little hole for me.

Onto the story. Basically Alex is a half-blood. Her and her mom are on the run from the Covenant, and have been for about three years. Alex isn't quite sure why they're on the run because her mom hasn't told her, but she goes along with it. So they've been living in the human world for all this time. But their past is about to come back to haunt them when a daimon (a rogue pure-blood who sucks the life out of pure-bloods and sometimes half-bloods) finds them.

Really enjoyed this. Action packed for such a small little package. Alex's personality is fantastic. I'm a sucker for a chick who's sarcastic and she's that for sure. I will definitely have to move on to Half-Blood asap because I need to know what's going to happen!

Favorite Quote:
"Whatever! Go save a dolphin or something!"

He whirled around. "It's a whale, Alex, a whale! That's what I'm interested in saving."

I threw up my arms. "What's wrong with saving dolphins?"

This was an interesting fluff type novella. I know it's a prelude to Half-Blood so I'm sure when I read that more of this will make sense.

Interesting premise and as we all know I'm a sucker for books that take ancient religions and work them into current world as actual people that are currently living. From what I gather this book is going off the Greek gods and goddesses. Which works because I know their stories the best anyway (because that's like 90% of books on ancient religious stories).

I'm definitely looking forward to reading this series though. That was a lot of action and stuff happening in 62 pages.

2'5. No se mucho qué decir, no me ha gustado del todo pero tampoco ha estado mal, creo que está bastante bien para introducir a la saga. Me ha resultado un poco dificil de leer en inglés, pero no imposible así que a ver los demás.

June 2022: My star rating remains the same. Alex's mortal friend Matt is a dummy and can get bent.

May 2018: I think rereading this I'm giving it a higher score. Really enjoyed the quick read despite the frustrations with documenting my progress. I think I'm in a mood like itching for a fight and that's why this was more satisfying than last time.
I'm starting a reread of the series because I never did read Sentinel when it came out and I also have the first book of the spinoff series. Was gonna just read Sentinel but it's been so long I forgot what happened. I vaguely remember the series being similar to Vampire Academy.

June 2013: I like it, it's a nice introduction to the series. I'm glad I was given the opportunity to read it thanks to my friend. Now I can start on Half-Blood tomorrow.

description

*This was in the back of the UK edition of HALF-BLOOD, published by Hodder & Stoughton*

This novella was quick and addictive, but at the same time heartbreaking. I strongly dislike these covers though, I much prefer the UK editions.

This novella follows Alex in the moments before her mother's death, and the events that followed which caused her to land in a warehouse surrounded by daimons, directly before the Covenant found her.

In this novella you really got to witness the more vulnerable and teenage side to Alex. It was heart breaking to witness her realising and trying to comprehend the death of her mother, whilst simultaneously trying to understand what she had to do next. It really let you preview a different side to Alex's personality that had yet to be explored in Half-Blood.

The plot of this novella was fast-paced and riveting, though sad and mournful. It really made you sympathise with Alex as you felt you were constantly their beside but could do nothing to help. There were certainly some dangerous scenes, therefore this novella was quite a surprise to me by how much depth there was to it in those 80 pages.

Therefore this novella is definitely worth the read after having read Half-Blood, as it will certainly break your heart and have you wishing you could help Alex.

A pesar de ser un libro cortito ya que es la precuela de esta saga la verdad es que me ha gustado bastante la presentacion del mundillo y me lo he leido en nada con ganas de saber más de Alex y todo lo que le va a pasar a partir de ahora

An old school YA JLA with mythology and super powers.
