When I was first told about this book, I was assured that you did not have to be a runner to enjoy this book, and that is 100% true.
I can't remember the last time I ran.
I feel too old and too out of shape, but as this book says
“You don't stop running because you get too old,
you get too old because you stopped running”
Not sure how that works for someone who never started running, but I digress.
My favorite part was the expensive running shoes vs the inexpensive running shoes. With results from different studies and statistics, it was informative but interesting.
You truly don't have to be a runner to like this book, you just need to enjoy good writing, and appreciate information.

I think I should have read this book before I read his second book. I enjoyed the story telling, in a fictional way, with tiny bits of interesting facts and science tossed in.
Super interesting book! Enlightening me to a lot of myths about running and actually got me itching to get moving.
My review is really more of a 3.5, I have mixed feelings. I loved the descriptions of amazing races, insane conditions, and powerful people, and even began to tear up during the final chapters. However, certain parts got bogged down by a preachy quality. "We were born to run", "shoes are the devil", etc. The science and math aspects also felt jumbled and forced, I'm no expert but it felt as if the facts weren't cohesive, and perhaps the author didn't have the greatest grasp of what he was talking about.
Finally, I love running, but I had some miffs with this book that came more with societal problems evident in the running and extreme sports world, not with the story/author himself. Certain quotes in the book made me pretty uncomfortable, like
Anyway, overall not a bad read, and I can see why/how it became a national best seller, and really, I'm sad the wild ride is now over, but I'm still glad I got it for free and didn't have to buy it myself.

Spoiler
when the "beautiful blond nutritionist flashed her breasts" to give an "extra perk" to the runner she was pacing. Or one of the quotes from the various doctors within the book: "eat like a poor person and you'll only see your doctor on the golf course."Anyway, overall not a bad read, and I can see why/how it became a national best seller, and really, I'm sad the wild ride is now over, but I'm still glad I got it for free and didn't have to buy it myself.

Not a great book. It's basically a chat with super athletes (they run 90+ miles a week). It's well-enough written that you think you should be able to finish it. But it takes forever ... because it's not that great and you read a few dozen books in between the chapters of this one. When I got to chap 25 the printer went haywire and double stamped all the words on the page. That was it for me. If it would have been a good book I would have felt the need to get to the bookstore or library to get a replacement/property printed book. When I just tossed it out I finally was able at admit it was just garbage.
Loved!! Both educational and inspirational. This book is simply amazing.
This book blew my mind. The writing is original, the story-telling inspiring, and the journey unforgetable. You don't have to be a runner to enjoy this book, but if you're like me, you'll want to be runner by he end.
Fantastic. I would suggest not reading this when you are injured because it will make you want to run. I want to run so badly now!!
