Anyway I think the bigger critique of this novel is the casual racism that pervades the narrative. Was the scene where an indigenous man tries to barter for Nora because she has red hair really necessary?

Aside from that, I found the story and slow evolution of the love between the two main characters completely understandable in the historical setting. A marriage like a business transaction with benefits to both parties; forced proximity at it's best. A genuine love developed between the characters and this was very well portrayed.
One thing I found a bit distracting was the use of pronouns. One of the main characters identified as a man and preferred he/him pronouns. Yet, throughout the story, the pronoun choice flip flopped from he/him to she/her. I tried to find a pattern to it; like if she was thinking about herself, the pronouns were she/her, but if her wife was thinking about her, she used she used he/him. Conclusion: I couldn't find the pattern!
