I really enjoyed this book. Within the first ten pages I was hooked on the writers writing. The characters were developed really well and it made me wish I was apart of the story line.
The story is similar to hunger games type themes to evil king type villainy.
It was absolutely scrumptious, every second of reading.

It took a reeeeeally long time to get hooked. Honestly I still don’t know how I feel about it. When I think about the story, I really liked it but I was never actively enjoying reading it 😂 This was also my first true fantasy so maybe I just don’t like fantasy with fighting and stuff 🤷🏼‍♀️ I also felt like it wasn’t very original. I felt like it was Hunger Games meets Psych with a splash of Love Island😂Nevertheless, I will be finishing the rest of the series at some point.

DID NOT FINISH: 31%

Narrative wasn’t compelling enough. Characters lacked chemistry, banter felt forced. Weird pacing: 40% in and the trials haven’t even happened yet. Kai felt like a copy-paste version of every romantasy male lead ever, rendering him completely boring and borderline cringe. Paedyn’s character had potential, but it was brought down by the overall lack of personality of the book.

World building lacked foundation, and the writing itself wasn’t that remarkable at all (and the naming lacked imagination). I still don’t get why they have the Trials, or why they killed off “the Ordinaries”. It seemed like a shortcut way of adding tension without proper history. A character-centred fantasy romance could’ve worked if the characters were written better, but they literally meet and instantly fell in love/felt attraction to each other. Kinda defeats the purpose of an ‘enemies to lovers’.

Also the book was just littered with so many typos and errors I couldn’t handle it. This book needs an editor so badly.

It’s essentially a rip off of the Hunger Games but with magic.
