lighthearted medium-paced

This was definitely just fine-- I feel like I will instantly forget everything that happened in this book but it was fun enough while I read it. Just kind of watching the lives of 3 women in one wealthy family... barely anything happens... some drama ensues but I was never that keyed in.

would have liked a scene where georgiana apologized to sasha directly, but i suppose it’s realistic this way. overall good book, interesting themes of generational wealth, class tension, and family.

the setting was good, but nothing really happened

This is exactly the kind of summer book I like to read. The plot wasn’t too serious, the characters were funny and relatable and there was a happy ending. Was this a life changing piece of literature? No. But, was it entertaining and lighthearted, Yes.

Goodness gracious. What a useless book.

It seems insane to me, gross even? that in the year 2023 anyone would even remotely care to write a whole book about the horrendously boring navel gazing of the white ultra elite. On top of that this book has no plot. On top of that not one single character is likeable at all, and not even in an interesting way (you can have good, nuanced, interesting unlikeable characters!).

The story follows 3 women of an ultra rich family of real estate investment wealth (should have just closed the book right there as soon as I realized this). Two sisters and a sister-in-law. And then you read 300 pages of their annoying little thoughts and self absorption and tennis matches. They make a tiny bit of progress in their characters, then they all regress to being awful and then in like the last 20 pages Jackson tries to have them all magically work everything out. Then there's the absolutely unserious and uncritical look of rich philanthropy as if these old money rich people deciding maybe they should give away a bit is some incredible feat!!! Omg heroes!!! And of race dynamics - one white character once reflects on a golf club having some Black people only to realize that it was actually a special event to honour golf caddies (the Black men there) ok????? Congrats on being self aware for 15 mins??? Let’s all collectively pat ourselves on the back for contemplating that.

The whole book is icky, yucky, terrible and frustrating. Cannot belieeeeeeve this was nominated on this website for best novel when it is in fact so boring and unimportant and pretentious but pretending to be critical of that. If I were Roger Ebert's Wario (Waroger) I would confidently give this... Two thumbs down!!!!

I'm not even dignifying this review with a spoiler warning because there is nothing of substance to spoil here.
