I would have liked this Civil War novel better if I had been able to like the main character, Mary Sutter, more. I love books with strong women characters, but they need to have something compelling about them. Considering how not-so-likable I found her, it then seemed strange to me that the 3 main male characters ALL were in love with her. What did they see that I didn't? LOL I was also disappointed that there was no afterward. One review I read on Goodreads talked about meeting the author and her interesting stories of her original ideas for the story and the research she went through in writing it. I wish that had been included at the end of the book! Guess I'll go search out what I can find.
good book and interesting view of Washington area civil war history.
A historical fiction featuring a woman of strength and intelligence whose romantic suiters appreciation her character and abilities rather than being swept off their feet by irresistible physical beauty brings a fresh approach to this genre. The book is well written and doesn't leave the reader feeling like they know exactly how the story will end when they have only just begun reading. One of very few historical fiction novels that I would actually read a second time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction. The characters were well fleshed out and believable. The storyline was realistic.
Good book with strong characters. I liked the premise of Mary becoming a doctor during this time period (Civil War). The historical references were also intriguing since I am currently living in the D.C. area.
I enjoyed this book although it did have a few boring parts. But overall it was a interesting read and I did get a kick out it being based in my area, Albany N.Y. I think it gave a pretty good picture of how gruesome and difficult the civil war was especially before doctors had much medical knowledge.
