only reason it isnt a 5 star is bc of the puffy eyes and ache in my chest. what a way to suck me in and destroy me with less than 500 pages. well. fucking. done. i am distraught.

…. I am speechless. This is the first dark romance that I’ve given 5 stars, but it’s truly heart wrenching. I mean, the end killed me ().
My only, only complaint with this book was that during the middle, I felt it was too long. By the end of the book, I feel that it was really two novels condensed into one and that all of the honeymoon phase scenes we got (which felt like dragging at the time) were to make up for the ending.
Onto the things I like. This was easily the best written dark romance I’ve read. The foreshadowing () was obvious to me, but still subtle throughout. The romantic banter wasn’t cringey. The MMC felt both justified and like a villain. The FMC felt rational for the most part and like an adult. The main conflict wasn’t miscommunication. And lastly, this book did a good job of framing the psychotic break that our main characters went through.
I’m not sure what else to write in this review. I knew the ending was dark and, in a lot of ways, I appreciate that this story didn’t turn suddenly all sunshine and rainbows, but it left me sad and speechless. Regardless of whether I would’ve preferred an HEA, it was fitting and well written. Be warned going in, while the author was writing this book, her father committed suicide, and this is clearly part of the grieving process for her. Read her TWs and brace yourself.

Telegraphed the plot twists early. Also, apparently ends in a lot of murder/suicides and I’m not there

The only reason this didn’t absolutely destroy me is because I mentally prepared for MONTHS. But there is now a gaping hole in my chest where these characters will be. I’ll start healing by gaslighting myself into believing a happy ending we never got. Life is sad.

I think I need some time to process…a lot of time actually. Because wow!
I’ve had this book on my TBR for awhile and had heard good things about the audiobook. I was slightly afraid to listen to it though; it’s one thing to read a tragedy but a whole other to listen to it.
I’m so happy that I picked listening to this one over reading. The writing style and depth that is brought to the story and characters is great. When it comes to this type of villain story there are some things that can feel a bit cliché. While there were a few of those moments, the narrators kept me engaged and moving forward. I’m glad I didn’t stop because it’s worth it. The ending…I’m speechless 😬😳😧🤯
Lee and Joe both did a phenomenal job with pulling out every last ounce of emotions while narrating. This is an audiobook you can feel. It gave me the chills, caused my heart to skip a beat or several, and much more. I especially love how unhinged a certain character gets.
There’s so much more I could and want to say but I don’t want to ruin anything. Just know it’s an emotional rollercoaster of a book full of darkness, love, trauma, plot twists, and ultimately tragedy. Be sure to check CW/TW with this one. There is not a HEA so proceed with caution.
